Allow Speed to Dictate the Line of Your Putts

Problem:
How many times have you been on the course listening to golfers discussing how much a particular putt will break?  Does it sound familiar that one golfer will say, “The putt will break two inches,” while the other will say, “No, it is going to break four inches?”  That can all be quiet confusing.  The truth is that both reads could be correct depending on how hard the golfer intends to hit the putt.

Try:
When on the practice putting green, find a putt that has some break to it.  Then try to make the putt with a lot of speed, then moderate speed, and finally putt it in the hole with minimal speed so it barely roles in.  The harder you hit a putt, the less break you will need to play.  The softer you hit a putt, the more break you will need to play.

Why:

  1. Doing this drill will promote better speed control and feel when on the course.
  2. Developing an awareness of how speed and line are interrelated, will give you options in different circumstances on the greens, and ultimately cut strokes off your score.
