Great Form Matched With Great Execution
As with each part of your golf game, there is a time to train the mechanical aspects of your form and a time to trust your practice and play. In this year’s PGA Championship, Jason Day was able to do just that. Not only did he drive the ball incredibly well all week, but he also continued his great putting all the way through to the very end on Sunday. It was the perfect combination of great form, matched with great execution.
Here are a few tips to help you to stay out of your own way, just as Jason did, and get the most out of the current state of your putting game:
“SEE IT. FEEL IT”
Create a consistent pre-shot routine. This can include visualization of the ball’s path to the hole, and practice strokes to “feel” the perfect speed for the putt you are looking at.
“TRUST IT”
Once you are standing over the ball, commit to the line you have chosen, and speed you are “feeling” in your pre-shot routine, and then hit it without second guessing it. This is what trust is all about. If you are second guessing the line and speed you have chosen, back away and start your routine over. Only putt when you are totally committed.
“BE PROCESS ORIENTED”
Make up your mind ahead of time, that no matter what results come your way, you aren’t going to abandon the process listed above. Rather than getting caught up in the results, make it your goal during a round of golf to measure your success by how well you mentally prepared and committed to each putt. If the results you would like continue to elude you after following this process, you will know it’s time to work on your technique. This will ensure that YOU have great form matched with great execution.
