Improve Your Iron Game!

“Reverse every natural instinct and do the opposite of what you are inclined to do, and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing.”  ~ Ben Hogan

Those wise words are from one of the greatest ball strikers of all time. When it comes to becoming a great iron player, many golfers have to go against their natural instinct in order to improve. A common reason why golfers struggle making consistent contact with their irons is because they tend to hang back on their trail leg while “cupping” their top wrist at impact (meaning their top hand’s knuckles are pointing more to the sky at impact). This is all in an effort to help the ball into the air. Unfortunately, those mechanics will generally create a mix of fat and thin shots, and if decent contact is occasionally made, a high and weak ball flight is the result.

Next time you go to practice, try to get into the impact position that I am demonstrating in the picture above.  Notice how the majority of my weight is on my lead leg at impact. Also, observe how the knuckles of my left hand are pointing towards the target rather than the sky. These are two huge factors when it comes to a making solid contact with your irons. When you go to practice, start off with short shots and then work into longer ones to get the feeling of this proper impact position. When done correctly, this move will help you add more distance and consistency to your iron game.
